something new
at school i get a little tired of just being an athlete. all my life sports have pretty much occupied my time. for a while i took jazz class, horse back riding lessons, went to art camp, went to oceanography camp, yet sports have stayed consistent in my life. i do love them and i'm pretty good at them, definitely main reasons why they have stuck with me for so long. but every once and a while i get bored of just being the athlete. so in the past, i've tried to do things that branch out a little, and community service and volunteering are some of the things i like to do. this semester i have signed up to be a mentor of a 5th grader at a near by elementary school. i've only been once but it was amazing! we're called mentors rather than tutors because we don't help the kids with homework, unless they ask us, we just spend an hour with them: talking, playing games, hanging out with other mentors and mentees. it's really cool. today i'm going again. my mentee's name is yanise. she's adorable. she's in 5th grade and is hispanic. she really likes that she gets to hang out with college kids. she gave me a big hug after only playing with her for an hour last week. but it made me feel so good. can't wait to see her again today! i definitely think i will stick to mentoring through the rest of my time at trinity.

That sounds fantastic! I bet Yanise is feeling as thrilled and lucky as you are to have this experience! You have always been such a well rounded young lady. While sports are something you excel in, they do not make up the total of Katherine. Kudos to you for trying something new and I am certainly glad you like it so much.
All my love.
That is so awesome Katherine! I have been mentoring a young 3rd grader this school year and it has been the most rewarding experience of my life! I'm so glad you are doing something different and so fun! I promise you will continue to learn just as much from Yanise as she will from you.
Mentoring sounds great. Thinking about it made me realize I sure could have used one when I was in the fifth grade.Keep it up. Nothing in life is more rewarding than giving of yourself. I'm real proud of you.
