baby sign language

today in my child development class we were talking about infants and language development. one of the ta's in the class is doing a lot of research on sign language; sign language for deaf and for non-deaf babies. we focused a lot of sign language for non-deaf babies. these babies are learning sign language and are communicating with their parents non-verbally at early ages and are even proven to talk earlier. we watched two great clips of one non-deaf baby who has learned a lot of signs already and is already learning to read and spell at the age of 2 and a half. this is way before most babies learn how to read. much of this class is very interesting and has popped some good ideas into my head about raising my own children. but this sign language seems even more interesting to me. hopefully going into the education department some day, sign language might be a good language to learn, also for the raising of my own child. take a look at this video and this video to watch a baby signing and how far she has come. it's very interesting.

fun day!

i'm trying to get more involved on campus. i don't want to be just an athlete here at trinity. today i stepped out of that box and participated with the boys and girls club. it's an organization that's run all over the nation. it's a place where kids can go when they aren't in school that keeps them off the streets and out of trouble. today there was a three hour fair. it was definitely a lot of fun. i painted faces. i'm not the best artist in the world but i think i managed and i think the kids had fun with it. i'm definitely looking forward to continuing to be part of this group. hopefully i can get involved in some other ways as well. it's nice to really integrate yourself in the community around you. the kids at trinity lead very luxurious lives while the people of hartford definitely don't. giving back really feels good.

trinfield

well trinity softball has officially started. today we did a run through of our work out with our new trainer. this means lifting three times a week with captains practices in between. 5 months until the season. i think it's a bit much but at least i'll be staying in good shape. i really like all the freshman so it's a good time to do some extra bonding with them. all of this will ultimately help us in the end so i can't be too bitter about it. i'm definitely looking forward to the new season, i know that it can definitely be a lot better than last year. i'll keep you posted.

9/11

another september 11th has come and gone. it's been 7 years now. this is my second september 11th at college and it's very interesting that there's really nothing done about it. in high school we always had a moment of silence and most teachers would talk about it. i only had one professor talk about it but only because it related to our course material. my other professors didn't talk about it and i never talked about it with any of my peers or friends. it's interesting, that's all. i guess this is my time to reflect on that day and send my thoughts and wishes to all those who were directly affected by 9/11.

the fam

i've had a rough couple of days here at college. but all is pretty well now. i definitely need to thank my family for that. i'm very hard on myself and i can get down on myself very easily and quickly. thankfully i have such a great support system around me helping out. my parents are the best that i could have ever asked for. my sisters, especially since they are older than me, are wise and have helped me out in some of my worst times. my extended family are all supporters and i love them all for that. family has always been such a big part of my life. i've always been the little faf running around and wanting nothing more than to play with my cousins or go upstate new york with everyone or arrive first on christmas eve or fly on a plane by myself to visit family members. even though i may not have talked to you directly in the past couple of days, i just want to say thank you. i love you all!

namaste

today my roommate holly and i went to yoga. there are free classes twice a week. i've done some yoga in the past so i wanted to try it out here. it's only a 1 hour class but we both really liked it. it was so relaxing but definitely a work out. on wednesday we have a softball meeting and i want to bring up that there are free yoga classes and we should all go. hopefully it goes over well. i know that aunt joan would be proud of me for taking yoga classes as she is the only other person i've ever done yoga with. if anyone has old yoga mats (cough cough mom or aunt joan) and would like to lend some to myself and holly that would be great. i'm really excited to do it again! go out and join a class.
